Balsamic Onion Burger

This 30 Minute Balsamic Onion Burger puts a delicious spin on the classic burger. The star of the recipe is the balsamic caramelized onions, which are cooked in butter until tender and golden before being finished with a sweet and tangy balsamic glaze.

The recipe is simple, uses just 9 ingredients, and comes together in about 30 minutes. Serve it with chips, fries, or your favorite simple side for an easy weeknight dinner.

How to make Balsamic Caramelized Onions

  • Cut the onion into slices about ½ inch thick.
  • Heat the butter in a large skillet over medium heat, then add the sliced onions.
  • Cook the onions for 12–15 minutes, stirring every few minutes. Reduce the heat if the onions begin to brown too quickly.
  • When the onions become soft and golden, stir in the balsamic vinegar, brown sugar, and a small pinch of salt.
  • Continue cooking until the balsamic mixture thickens into a syrupy glaze.
  • Transfer the finished onions to a bowl and set them aside while preparing the burgers. The onions can also be prepared up to 4 days ahead and refrigerated.

With the onions ready, the burgers are quick and easy to assemble. The beef patties only need salt and pepper for seasoning, while the toppings stay simple so the balsamic onions remain the star. Peppery arugula, creamy mayo, and mild provolone add the perfect balance to the sweet and savory flavors.

Common Questions

Why do you add sugar to the caramelized balsamic onions?

Onions naturally contain sugar and can become caramelized when slowly cooked over low heat. Traditional caramelized onions can take around 45 minutes, so adding a little brown sugar helps speed up the process. It also adds sweetness that balances the sharp, tangy flavor of the balsamic vinegar.

Can the caramelized onions be made ahead of time?

Yes. The balsamic caramelized onions can be prepared up to 4 days in advance. Store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator until you’re ready to use them.

4 whole grain buns
Salt and pepper
Toppings: Arugula, Mayo
