Texas Margarita (Orange Margarita)

Texas Margaritas (also known as Orange Margaritas) are bright, refreshing cocktails that are incredibly easy to prepare. They’re a great choice for summer cookouts, brunch gatherings, taco nights, or simply relaxing on a warm evening. This margarita combines tequila with fresh orange and lime juice, orange liqueur, and a touch of agave nectar.

I love the bold, citrusy flavor of this margarita, especially on warm summer nights. One of the best things about it is how simple it is to customize the sweetness. For a sweeter cocktail, mix in a little agave nectar. If you prefer a lighter, more refreshing flavor, simply leave it out for a crisp and naturally citrusy drink.

If you enjoy this Texas Margarita recipe, be sure to try my other margarita favorites, Hibiscus Margarita and Blood Orange Margarita, which makes a delicious seasonal twist during the winter months.

Ingredients & Substitutions

  • Tequila: Choose silver or blanco tequila for this margarita. Its clean, crisp flavor pairs especially well with the orange and lime juices. Gold tequila can add stronger vanilla, caramel, or oak notes that may overpower the bright citrus flavors. Use your favorite blanco tequila for the best results.
  • Fresh Orange Juice: Freshly squeezed orange juice gives the margarita a naturally sweet, vibrant citrus flavor. For the best taste, use ripe, juicy oranges such as navel oranges. Store-bought orange juice can also work when fresh oranges aren’t available.
  • Fresh Lime Juice: Fresh lime juice adds the tartness that balances the sweetness of the orange juice and agave. You’ll need roughly 6 limes to make four margaritas, depending on their size and how juicy they are. Keep a few extra limes on hand for garnishing.
  • Orange Liqueur: Orange liqueur adds another layer of citrus flavor to the cocktail. Triple sec is a type of orange liqueur and works well in this recipe. You can also use another orange liqueur you already have available.
  • Agave Nectar: Agave nectar adds sweetness and helps balance the tart citrus. If you don’t have agave, you can substitute simple syrup. Because agave is slightly sweeter, you may need a little more simple syrup to reach the same level of sweetness. For a less-sweet margarita, simply leave the agave out.
  • Garnishes: Finish the glass with a salt or sugar rim, depending on your preference. For a spicy, tangy variation, use Tajín chili-lime seasoning around the rim. An orange slice or lime wedge also makes an easy and colorful garnish.

How to Make Texas Margaritas

Step 1: (Optional) Run a lime or orange wedge around the rim of each glass, then dip the rim into salt or sugar.

Step 2: Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the fresh orange juice, lime juice, tequila, orange liqueur, and agave nectar.

Step 3: Shake firmly for about 10–15 seconds, or until the mixture is thoroughly chilled and slightly frothy.

Step 4: Strain the margarita into the prepared glasses.

Step 5: Finish with an orange slice or lime wedge for a simple citrusy garnish.
